1961 view of Boston New Theatre & Corn Exchange This photograph was taken from the balcony of 'The Stump' (the Parish Church tower) in 1961 and shows a corner of the Market Place on the Wednesday or Saturday market. The New Theatre (New Electric Theatric 1910 - closed the year before) is second on the left next to the white 1933 facade of Marks& Spencer. The auditorium is set behind, being the Corn Exchange of 1855. The projection box and fly tower (both added in a 1926 rebuild) show clearly. Running beside the auditorium is that of the 1914 Scala, the auditorium of which was untouched, apart from seats and stage equipment cleared, while the foyer and winter garden had become Brown Bros. & Taylor's furniture shop in 1949. There had been a catenary wire with hemp pulley line stretched between
the two boxes for the transfer of spools. The New was demolished later in the year, but the ex-Scala still stands as a Poundstretcher store. Copyright photograph from the Gould Theatre Collection.
